SIIT’s Removing Barriers to Net-Zero Building for First Nations Communities Through Education project is focused on equipping Indigenous leadership and professionals with the skills and knowledge to take part in Canada’s Green economy. This project is designed to empower communities by promoting sustainable building practices and enhancing employment opportunities.

This project offers a unique opportunity for Indigenous communities to engage in training that will build leadership capacity, enhance professional skills, and work towards eco-friendly housing solutions that benefit both the environment and the community.

Net-Zero Home Application Package:

A key opportunity in this initiative is the construction of a Net-Zero home in a qualifying Indigenous community, offering significant benefits in energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced housing resilience.

The goal is to promote sustainable building practices and foster community development through the construction of a Net-Zero home.

Indigenous Sustainable Housing for Leaders Micro-Credentials

The Indigenous Sustainable Housing for Leaders Micro-Credentials program equips participants with the knowledge to lead in sustainable building practices.

Through in-depth study, participants learn green building principles, innovative materials, and techniques for constructing and retrofitting net-zero homes. They will explore the 2020 Energy Codes and strategies for deep energy retrofitting to improve occupant health and reduce environmental impact. This micro-credential program is designed for community leaders, housing managers, and project leaders, empowering them to drive sustainable construction, Indigenous housing management, and community development. Net-Zero Home Builder for Indigenous Trades Professionals Program

Following the Micro-Credentials, the Net-Zero Home Builder for Indigenous Trades Professionals program will equip participants with the skills required to construct Net-Zero homes.

The program will take place in 2026-27, with the goal of building a Net-Zero home in one of the participating First Nations communities. More information is coming soon!
