Program Description
The Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (Category E) program is designed to prepare you for a dynamic career in avionics, where precision, problem-solving, and technical expertise are essential. Throughout this two-year diploma, you will develop both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills required to install, inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot aircraft electrical and electronic systems. You will work with industry-standard tools and develop a strong foundation in math, physics, electrical fundamentals, and aviation regulations while gaining experience with communication, navigation, and flight control systems through practical lab work. By the end of the program, you will be able to interpret technical drawings, follow industry regulations, and confidently perform maintenance tasks in complex aviation environments. Graduates who meet the regulatory requirements will be credited with 18 months towards current 48 months of industry experience required to obtain license.
Academic Requirements
- Regular Grade 12/ Adult 12/ GED with one of the following Math 20 Level:
- Foundations of Mathematics 20
- Pre-Calculus 20
- Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 20
- SIIT AME Prep Applied Certificate
OR
Non-Academic Requirements
- Resume submission with application
Industry Requirements
- Include good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, and physical agility
- Ability to work in a loud and/or confined workplace
- Ability to work at heights
Acceptance Policy
SIIT provides preferential admission to applicants who are of First Nation’s ancestry; however, SIIT programs are open to everyone, and all application will be considered. SIIT relies on section 56 of The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, 2018 to provide preference to applicants who are of First Nations’ ancestry.
Permanent Resident Applicant Information
SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident to apply.

- International Qualifications Assessment (IQAS) International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) | Alberta.ca Your high school/secondary education credentials must be assessed through this service.
- Canadian Language Benchmark – English Assessment of CLB 7. We will accept either International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Academic or Canadian English Language Proficiency Program (CELPIP) – General.

What to Expect
Length of Program
The length of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Category E) is 2 years full time (2070 hours).
Delivery Method
This program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussions, assignments, and in-class review of topics, as well as practical components during lab hours. Students will have access to materials on D2L – Brightspace.
Academic Policy
Students attending must adhere to SIIT Academic & Student policies which are available on the mySIIT dashboard on the SIIT website.
Attendance Policy
Students are required to attend instructor-led theory and practical sessions and must maintain a minimum of 95% attendance throughout the program, as required by Transport Canada CARs 566.
Evaluation
This program is based on a 70% assessment model. A course passing mark is 70% and a passing overall program mark is 70%. Students must successfully complete each course to complete the program.
Graduation Credential
Successful students will receive an Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Category E) Diploma with a statement of approval from Transport Canada. Successful students will also receive an SIIT Statement of Completion for Human Factor Training IAW CARs 573.06 (proof of training only). Students will also receive a WHMIS Training Certificate of Completion.

Graduates of the program may find work primarily in aircraft maintenance facilities as apprentice
Aircraft Maintenance Engineers. There may also be future opportunities to gain employment with companies such as Boeing Aerospace, Rockwell Collins, Lockheed Martin or Bombardier. In Saskatchewan, the wages range from $27.96 to $45.92 per hour.
Further Education
The Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License involves a 48-month apprenticeship. Transport Canada will give credit for 18 months towards the apprenticeship time to successful grads of the AME program. Students will need to complete the remaining 30 months of training with an employer to challenge the regulations exam. Upon successful completion of the regulations exam, students may apply for an E License.
