Program Description

This program is a 22-week program designed to prepare Indigenous people who are interested in a career path as an Electrician. There will be 21 weeks of training and 1 week of direct industry experience achieved by either work placement or through special projects. The program prepares students to layout, assemble, install, test, troubleshoot and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices and related equipment in all types of building and other structures. This program includes all required learning outcomes to meet Saskatchewan Construction Electrician Apprenticeship Technical Training, Level One.

  • Regular Grade 11 or GED
  • Credit of one of the indicated grade math levels 20:
    • Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics
    • Foundations of Mathematics
    • Pre-Calculus
  • Science credit at the indicated grade level 10.

  • Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, at heights, in confined spaces and in hazardous environments.
  • Have good eyesight with distinguishing color, hearing, manual dexterity and physical agility.
  • Have good communication and organization skills, strong analytical skills and problem solving skills.

Acceptance Policy

Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.

English Language Benchmark

SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.

To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

U-PASS

The U-Pass is a City Transit bus pass for students that allow you to save on transportation costs. The U-Pass fee is provided at a reduced cost compared to a standard monthly City Transit pass and is mandatory for most SIIT students in Saskatoon and Regina. You may use the U-Pass as many times as you would like during the academic term. Students who meet certain requirements can opt-out of the U-Pass. Please contact the Admissions department for more information.

What to Expect

Length of Program

The length of the Electrical Foundation program is 22 weeks full-time/110 days (660 hours).

Instruction

This program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussion, assignments, labs, and in-class review of topics. Students will have access to materials which ill be distributed to each student as well as digital format on Brightspace.

Academic Policy

Students attending must adhere to SIIT Academic & Student policies which are available on the student dashboard on the SIIT website.

Attendance Policy

  • Students are required to attend instructor-led theory and practical sessions, online lectures and group activities, and must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance throughout the program.

Evaluation

Successful students will receive an Applied Certificate from SIIT.

Further Education

To be certified as a Construction Electrician, students will need to complete a four-year apprenticeship program. Once students successfully complete the required on-the-job training, technical training, exams, students are awarded a Red Seal Certification in order to be a construction electrician.

Apprentices must be employed and registered and in good standing with the apprenticeship commission. All apprentices must also maintain employment in their designated trade for the duration of their apprenticeship and are expected to submit their trade time hours every 6 months to SATCC in order to remain active and in good standing.

To graduate from each level of the apprenticeship program, an apprentice construction Electrician must successfully complete the required technical training and compile enough on-the-job experience to total at least 1800 hours each year. The total time required is 7200 hours and at least 4 years in the trade.

There are four levels of training delivered in Saskatchewan:

  • Level One: 8 Weeks
  • Level Two: 8 Weeks
  • Level Three: 8 Weeks
  • Level Four: 8 Weeks

Career Opportunities

Graduates will find entry-level work employed by electrical contractors and building maintenance departments. Construction electricians work in all construction sectors: New Home Building and Renovation, Heavy Industrial, Institutional and Commercial. Graduates will be eligible to start as Level 1 apprentice construction electricians.
