Forestry Heavy Equipment Operator
NOC – 8241
Program Description
This SIIT Forestry Heavy Equipment Operator program provides training in the safe operation of mechanized forestry equipment, routine maintenance of machinery and skill development in the basic operations of processing, bunching, delimbing, skidding and other forestry equipment operations. The program will concentrate on hands-on skill development with much of the program spent in the field and on the machines. On successful completion of the program, students will be well equipped with skills applicable to a broad variety of careers, and life essential skills.
Admission Requirements
- Math Credit at the indicated grade level 10
- Science Credit at the indicated grade level 10
- Applicants with a lower level may be considered depending on their experience
- Registered with SIIT Career Centre, and completed certificates (SCOT)
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
Industry Requirements
- Good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination
- Must be physically fit
Acceptance Policy
Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.
English Language Benchmark
SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.
To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

Tuition and Fees
There is no cost to attend this program. A training allowance will be provided to successful applicants.
What to Expect
Program Delivery
- The length of the Forestry heavy Equipment Operator program is 12 weeks full-time/60days (360 hours)
- The program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussions, assignments, and in-class review of topics
Attendance Policy
An attendance rate of 90% or more is required to graduate from this program.
Graduation Document
Students who successfully complete the Forestry Equipment Operator program will earn an Applied Certificate from SIIT. Students must pass all courses in the program to graduate.
Evaluation
A pass/fail grading system will be used in evaluating the skills learned. Skills developed during the training will be evaluated using a performance checklist.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of this program can expect to find employment in a variety of operations that use mechanized forestry equipment. Sectors that use this type of equipment include forestry harvesting operations, road building and in the oil and gas industry.
