Program Description
The SIIT Home Builder program is designed to provide students with experience of building a complete home. The program will develop the basic skills needed for entry-level work in residential or commercial construction. Students will develop skills in key aspects of house construction, job readiness, construction math, and safety. Students will also develop a good understanding of the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship system and the benefits of trade certification. On successful completion of the program, students will be well equipped with skills applicable to a broad variety of careers, and life essential skills.
Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
- Math Credit at the indicated grade level 10.
- Science Credit at the indicated grade level 10 (applicants with a lower level may be considered depending on their experience).
- Registered with SIIT JobConnections, and completed certificates (SCOT).
Industry Requirements
- Include good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, and physical agility.
Acceptance Policy
Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.
English Language Benchmark
SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.
To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

Tuition, Fees, and Funding
Eligible students can expect to pay little to no tuition or fees to participate in this program. Career Centre staff will assess your eligibility for funding when you apply.
What to Expect
Program Delivery
This program is delivered over a 16-week period.
Students will learn through a combination of classroom and work, building a new house from the ground up. The program is delivered on-site in a community. The students work under the supervision of the instructor who is a qualified journeyperson.
Attendance Policy
Regular attendance is essential for academic success. Each program has specific attendance requirements that must be adhered to in order to graduate. In order to graduate from this program, an attendance rate of 90% or better is required.
Graduation Document
Students who graduate from this program will earn an Applied Certificate. Students must pass all courses in the program to graduate. Students must pass all courses in the program to graduate. The assessment method is a combination of performance tests and written tests with a pass mark of 50%.
Career Opportunities
Graduates will find entry-level work in residential construction at both the First Nation community level and in urban areas.
Indigenous graduates of the program can become indentured as apprentices in the Carpentry trade through an employer or the SIIT Joint Training Committee (JTC). Any graduates who become apprentices will also get 480 hours of technical training credit.
The main purposes of the JTC are to indenture Aboriginal people in the construction trades in Saskatchewan and to assist these apprentices to achieve full journeyperson status in their respective construction trades.
