Indigenous Project Management, Advanced Certificate
Program Description
Do you want to help grow Indigenous capacity and build better communities, one project at a time? Are you community-minded and detail-focused? SIIT’s Advanced Certificate in Indigenous Project Management is tailored to the unique strengths and challenges of Indigenous managers in Saskatchewan. You’ll learn technical project management skills through a culturally relevant and treaty based lens. Dive into relevant case studies from Saskatchewan projects explicitly developed for this program, led by experienced local champions. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn technical project management skills applicable to many jobs in high demand while building strong relationships and capacity at the community level. SIIT’s Indigenous Project Management Advanced Certificate is a flexible, virtual delivery course* built with the needs of First Nation working professionals in mind. Program materials, case studies highlighting local initiatives and cultural teachings, and course-specific content will be ideal for working professionals, those with families, and distance learners who want to earn the skills and knowledge needed to excel in an advanced certificate.
*There are two mandatory in-person engagements during the program:
- A 2-day orientation at program start
- A 1-day wrap-up at the program close where final projects will be presented for feedback
- In addition to project check-ins with your instructor during course four
Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
- Certificate or diploma in a related field (e.g. business, leadership, administration, etc.)
Non-Academic Requirements
- 3+years’ experience (co-) creating or leading projects
- A resume or C.V.
- Cover letter (500+ words), including:
- Statement of interest in the program
- Highlights of past roles, responsibilities, and descriptions of projects
- Experience in First Nations projects will be considered an asset
Acceptance Policy
Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.
English Language Benchmark
SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.
To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

The U-Pass is a City Transit bus pass for students that allow you to save on transportation costs. The U-Pass fee is provided at a reduced cost compared to a standard monthly City Transit pass and is mandatory for most SIIT students in Saskatoon and Regina. You may use the U-Pass as many times as you would like during the academic term. Students who meet certain requirements can opt-out of the U-Pass. What to Expect
Length of Program
This 8-month program covers four courses that are delivered in SIIT’s virtual learning environment
Delivery Method
Each week, students will engage in 8 hours of course content per week:
- 5 hours “asynchronous” learning (independent, self-directed learning) content curated on SIIT’s virtual learning platform Brightspace. This asynchronous learning includes case studies from local community projects, lessons, from local champions of Indigenous project management, texts, online discussions, assignments and coursework, recorded lessons, and documentaries.
- 3 hours “synchronous” learning (conventional class-based seminars) delivered virtually through explorations of projects and course content
Academic Policy
Students attending must adhere to SIIT Academic & Student policies which are available on the mySIIT dashboard on the SIIT website.
Attendance Policy
- Students need to complete all coursework and maintain a 90% attendance average for all synchronous sessions.
Evaluation
Students must receive a 65% or higher in all courses and complete all required courses to receive an Advanced Certificate in Indigenous Project Management.

Career Opportunities & Salaries
Completing this Advanced Certificate will provide you with the knowledge and experience to manage projects on- and off-reserve, working within the many fields covered under project management (NOC 13100). There is a broad range of jobs and skills taught throughout this course, leading to numerous job opportunities, and graduates will leave this program with applied skills in management, reporting, stakeholder and impact analysis, financial procurement, risk assessment, community relations, business development, and Indigenous relationship building. These skills allow graduates pathways into various essential business skills, from administration to analysis and management.
Further Education
Project managers in Canada make an average of $80K+ (up to $150K), or $20-$50/hr. Certificates from this course ensure a unique understanding of working on and off-reserve, providing a competitive edge in the industry. This course is an excellent pathway toward Professional Management Certification for those interested. Skill specializations in technical fields, management, trades, community health, and work-integrated learning often require post-secondary certificates or diplomas like those granted by completion of this program.
