Program Description
During this six-week program, students will become well-versed in the fundamentals of concrete reinforcing, including the types of reinforcing materials, reinforcement placement, and the role of reinforcement in enhancing the structural integrity of concrete structures. The course will cover essential topics such as the installation and inspection of reinforcement, reading and interpreting construction drawings, and understanding construction codes and standards. A strong emphasis is placed on hands on learning in the shop, ensuring that students are best prepared to excel on job sites upon graduating and obtaining employment. On successful completion of the program, students will be well equipped with skills applicable to a broad variety of careers, and life essential skills. Academic Requirements
- Math Credit at the indicated grade level 10
- Science Credit at the indicated grade level 10
- Applicants with a lower level may be considered depending on their experience.
Non-Academic Requirements
- Registered with SIIT JobConnections, and completed (SCOT)
Industry Requirements
- Include good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, and physical agility.
Acceptance Policy
SIIT provides preferential admission to applicants who are of First Nation’s ancestry; however, SIIT programs are open to everyone, and all application will be considered. SIIT relies on section 56 of The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, 2018 to provide preference to applicants who are of First Nations’ ancestry.
Permanent Resident Applicant Information
SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident to apply.
For Permanent Resident applications we will request the following documentation:
- Copy of Permanent Resident Card
- International Qualifications Assessment (IQAS) International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) | Alberta.ca Your high school/secondary education credentials must be assessed through this service.
- Canadian Language Benchmark – English Assessment of CLB 7. We will accept either International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Academic or Canadian English Language Proficiency Program (CELPIP) – General.

What to Expect
Length of Program
The length of the Introduction to Concrete Reinforcing program is 6 weeks full-time/30 days (180 hours).
Delivery Method
This program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussion, assignments, and in-class review of topics.
Academic Policy
Students attending must adhere to SIIT Academic & Student policies which are available on the student dashboard on the SIIT website.
Attendance Policy
Students are required to attend instructor-led theory and practical sessions and must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance throughout the program.
Evaluation
This assessment method is pass/fail. Students need to complete all courses in order to successfully complete the program.
Graduation Credential
Successful students will receive an Applied Certificate from SIIT.

Graduates may find work in their designated trade with a First Nation community or in an urban area.
Further Education
There may be an opportunity for students to become indentured as an apprentice through SIIT JTC, move to the next level of training, enroll in other programs or micro-credit courses.
