Program Description

This program is tailored for high school students interested in exploring career opportunities within the construction industry. Students will receive an introduction to essential construction skills, and develop the foundational knowledge required for entry-level work on both residential and industrial construction sites. Students will learn key construction basics, site safety protocols, and the proper use of hand tools, gaining practical skills that prepare them for the demands of a worksite. Students will have the opportunity to explore various trades within the industry, including carpentry, drywalling, and roofing. This exposure helps students understand the scope of each trade, allowing them to make informed decisions about potential career paths in construction. By the end of the program, students may be able to enter the construction workforce in entry-level positions or pursue further training in their chosen trade.

  • Math Credit at the indicated grade level 10
  • Science Credit at the indicated grade level 10
    • Applicants with a lower level may be considered depending on their experience

  • Registered with SIIT Career Centre, and completed certificates (SCOT)

Industry Requirements

  • Include good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, and physical agility

Acceptance Policy

Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.

English Language Benchmark

SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.

To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

What to Expect

Length of Program 

The length of the Introduction to Construction Work program is 8 weeks full-time/40ays (240 hours).

Delivery Method 

This program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussion, assignments, and in-class review of topics.  

Academic Policy 

Students attending must adhere to SIIT Academic & Student policies which are available on the student dashboard on the SIIT website. 

Attendance Policy

Students are required to attend instructor-led theory and practical sessions and must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance throughout the program. 

Evaluation 

This assessment method is pass/fail. Students need to complete all courses in order to successfully complete the program. 

Graduation Credential

Successful students will receive an Applied Certificate from SIIT. 

Career Opportunities 

Career Opportunities & Salaries

Graduates may find work in the construction industry in a variety of entry level position such as carpenter helpers or apprentices.

Further Education

There may be an opportunity for students to become indentured as an apprentice through SIIT JTC, move to the next level of training, enroll in other programs or micro-credit courses.
