Industrial Mechanics (Millwright) Applied Certificate
Program Description
This program is designed to prepare students for a career as an Industrial Mechanic (Millwright). The program consists of 16 weeks of level one technical training, 5 weeks of essential skills and job readiness training, and 1 week of direct industry experience. The program prepares students to read blueprints, diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work needed, and use hand and power tools to perform work processes. This program introduces ways to install and align stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment according to layout plans, as well as adjusting machinery and repairing or replacing defective parts. To support learner readiness, an optional adaptive assessment is available during the math portion of training for students who do not meet the standard entrance requirements. This program includes all required learning outcomes to meet Saskatchewan Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Apprenticeship Technical Training, Level One.

Academic Requirements
- Math Credit at the indicated grade level 11
- Foundations of Mathematics 20, Pre-Calculus 20, Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 20
- Science Credit at the indicated grade level 10
- Applicants who do not meet the minimum academic requirements may be considered based on relevant experience. Adaptive assessment may be used as an alternative entrance option to demonstrate required literacy and numeracy skills.
Non-Academic Requirements
- A valid driver’s license is strongly recommended, as many employment opportunities may require travel to job sites.
Industry Requirements
- Include good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, and physical agility.
Acceptance Policy
SIIT provides preferential admission to applicants who are of First Nation’s ancestry; however, SIIT programs are open to everyone, and all application will be considered. SIIT relies on section 56 of The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, 2018 to provide preference to applicants who are of First Nations’ ancestry.
Permanent Resident Applicant Information
SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident to apply.
For Permanent Resident applications we will request the following documentation:
- Copy of Permanent Resident Card
- International Qualifications Assessment (IQAS) International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) | Alberta.ca Your high school/secondary education credentials must be assessed through this service.
- Canadian Language Benchmark – English Assessment of CLB 7. We will accept either International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Academic or Canadian English Language Proficiency Program (CELPIP) – General.

What to Expect
Length of Program
The length of the Industrial Mechanics (Millwright) Applied Certificate program is 22 weeks fulltime/110 days (660 hours).
Delivery Method
This program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussions, assignments, and in-class review of topics, as well as shop courses. Students will have access to materials which will be distributed to each student as well as in digital format on Brightspace.
Academic Policy
Students attending must adhere to SIIT Academic & Student policies, which are available on the mySIIT dashboard on the SIIT website.
Attendance Policy
- Regular attendance is essential for academic success. Each program has specific attendance requirements that must be adhered to in order to graduate. In order to graduate from this program, an attendance rate of 90% or better is required.
- If you have been approved for funding, you must maintain the attendance required by your sponsoring agency to remain eligible to receive payment.
Evaluation
This program is based on both a pass/fail assessment model and a mark-based assessment model. Pass/fail courses (INMC 100 and INMC 200) are evaluated based on successful completion of curricular outcomes. Marks-based courses (INMC 101-109) are evaluated on successful completion of tests and shop projects, with a passing course mark of 60%. Students will complete a comprehensive written final exam with a passing exam mark of 60%. To graduate, an overall program average is 70% and a “Pass” designation for each pass/fail course.
Credential
Successful students will receive an Applied Certificate from SIIT.

Career Opportunities & Salaries
Graduates of the Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Foundation Program (NOC 72400) are prepared for entry-level employment in sectors such as manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, and processing facilities. The program provides credit toward Level 1 apprenticeship and equips students with the foundational skills and safety knowledge needed to begin their careers as apprentice industrial mechanics. In Saskatchewan, the wages range from $26.00 – $57.83 per hour.
Further Education
To be certified as an Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), students will need to complete a four-year apprenticeship program. Once students successfully complete the required on-the-job training, technical training and exams, students are awarded a Red Seal Certification in order to be an Industrial Mechanic (Millwright).
Apprentices must be employed and registered and in good standing with the apprenticeship commission. All apprentices must also maintain employment in their designated trade for the duration of their apprenticeship and are expected to submit their trade time hours every 6 months to SATCC in order to remain active and in good standing.
To graduate from each level of the apprenticeship program, an apprentice must successfully complete the required technical training and compile enough on-the-job experience to total at least 1800 hours each year. Total trade time required is 7200 hours and at least 4 years in the trade.
