Program Description
The Mining Industry Pre-Employment (MIP) program offers a comprehensive suite of courses designed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge for the mining industry. This program will provide students with an understanding of the duties and responsibilities of workers in the industry. Students will study and apply safe work practices, including personal protective equipment, equipment operation, and safety on the mine site. Students will receive essential training in underground mining and mineral processing operations, along with necessary industry certifications. The program concludes with an on-site practicum, providing students with valuable hands-on experience to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, ensuring they are fully equipped for the challenges of the mining industry.
Academic Requirements
- Grade 12 certification
Non-Academic Requirements
- Clean Criminal Record check of at least 7 years.
- Drug testing prior to the mine practicum.
- A valid driver’s license is preferred but candidates may be accepted if they can obtain the driver’s license prior to the end of the program.
Industry Requirements
- Include good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, and physical agility.
- Ability to work in a loud and/or confined workplace.
- Ability to work irregular and long shift hours.
Acceptance Policy
Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.
English Language Benchmark
SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.
To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

What to Expect
Length of Program
The length of the Mining Industry Pre-Employment Program is 12 weeks full-time/60days (360 hours).
Delivery Method
This program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussion, assignments, and in-class review of topics. Students will have access to materials which will be distributed to each student as well as digital format on D2L — Brightspace.
Academic Policy
Students attending must adhere to SIIT Academic & Student policies which are available on the student dashboard on the SIIT websit.
Attendance Policy
Students are required to attend instructor-led theory and practical sessions and must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance throughout the program.
Evaluation
This program is based on a 70% assessment model. A course passing mark is 60% and a passing overall program mark is 70%. Students must successfully complete each course to complete the program. The practicum and MIP 115 Industry Tickets and Training are based on a pass/fail assessment. Students must “pass” the practicum to complete the program.
Graduation Credential
Successful students will receive an Applied Certificate from SIIT.
Career Opportunities
Career Opportunities & Salaries
Graduates may gain employment in the mining industry as a Mine Laborer, Mill Laborer, Mine Operator, Underground Miner, etc.
Further Education
There may be an opportunity for students to become indentured as an apprentice through the SIIT Joint Training Committee (JTC), enroll in the other programs or micro-credit courses.
