Program Description

The Mining Industry Pre-Employment (MIP) program offers a comprehensive suite of courses designed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge for the mining industry. This program will provide students with an understanding of the duties and responsibilities of workers in the industry. Students will study and apply safe work practices, including personal protective equipment, equipment operation, and safety on the mine site. Students will receive essential training in underground mining and mineral processing operations, along with necessary industry certifications. The program concludes with a Special Capstone Project, providing students with valuable hands-on experience to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, ensuring they are fully equipped for the challenges of the mining industry.

Non-Academic Requirements

  • Canadian Criminal Record Checks (CRC’s) – RCMP or Canadian Police Information Checks (PICs) Plus Canadian Vulnerable Sector Checks (VSCs)
    • An updated Criminal Record Check (CRC) may be required prior to the Special Capstone Project in weeks 11 and 12 of the program. The results of the CRC may impact eligibility for practicum placement.
  • Drug testing prior to on-site mine experience
    • Negative drug and alcohol tests may be required prior to the Special Capstone Project in weeks 11 and 12 of the program. The results of the test may impact eligibility for practicum placement.
  • A valid driver’s license is preferred.

Industry Requirements

  • Include good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, and physical agility.
  • Ability to work in a loud and/or confined workplace.
  • Ability to work irregular and long shift hours.

Acceptance Policy

SIIT provides preferential admission to applicants who are of First Nation’s ancestry; however, SIIT programs are open to everyone, and all application will be considered. SIIT relies on section 56 of The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, 2018 to provide preference to applicants who are of First Nations’ ancestry.

Permanent Resident Applicant Information

SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident to apply.
For Permanent Resident applications we will request the following documentation:

  • Copy of Permanent Resident Card
  • International Qualifications Assessment (IQAS) International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) | Alberta.ca Your high school/secondary education credentials must be assessed through this service.
  • Canadian Language Benchmark – English Assessment of CLB 7. We will accept either International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Academic or Canadian English Language Proficiency Program (CELPIP) – General.

What to Expect

Length of Program

The length of the Mining Industry Pre-Employment Program is 12 weeks full-time/60 days (360 hours).

Delivery Method

This program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussion, assignments, and in-class review of topics. Students will have access to materials which will be distributed to each student as well as digital format on D2L — Brightspace.  

Academic Policy

Students attending must adhere to SIIT Academic & Student policies which are available on the mySIIT dashboard on the SIIT website.

Attendance Policy

Students are required to attend instructor-led theory and practical sessions and must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance throughout the program.

Evaluation

This program is based on a 70% assessment model. A course passing mark is 60% and a passing overall program mark is 70%. Students must successfully complete each course to complete the program. MIPP 115 Industry Tickets and Training and MIPP 116 Special Capstone Project are based on a pass/fail assessment. Students must “pass” the Special Capstone Project to complete the program.

Graduation Credential

Successful students will receive an Applied Certificate from SIIT.

Career Opportunities

Career Opportunities & Salaries 

Graduates may gain employment in the mining industry as a Mine Laborer, Mill Laborer, Mine Operator, Underground Miner, etc. (NOC 85110). In Saskatchewan, the wages can range from $31.00-$57.00 per hour

Further Education

There may be an opportunity for students to become indentured as an apprentice through the SIIT Joint Training Committee (JTC), enroll in the other programs or micro-credit courses.
