Program Description

The SIIT Residential Renovation and Construction – High School program is designed to provide two areas of skill development for participants. The first area of focus will provide the basic skills needed for entry-level work in residential or commercial construction. The second area of focus will provide skills and knowledge needed to work at maintaining and renovating housing. Students will develop skills in safe operation of hand and stationary tools, basics of the construction industry, and residential renovation and maintenance. Students will have an opportunity to develop skills in several related trades such as carpentry, drywall and roofing. Also, students will get a basic introduction to the electrical and plumbing trades. Graduates of this program may meet the requirements for credit in the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship program of the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Commission (SATCC). On successful completion of the program, students will be well equipped with skills applicable to a broad variety of careers, and life essential skills.

  • Math Credit at the indicated grade level 10*
  • Science Credit at the indicated grade level 10*

*Applicants with a lower level may be considered depending on their experience

  • Include good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, and physical agility.

    Acceptance Policy

    SIIT provides preferential admission to applicants who are of First Nation’s ancestry; however, SIIT programs are open to everyone, and all application will be considered. SIIT relies on section 56 of The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, 2018 to provide preference to applicants who are of First Nations’ ancestry.

    Permanent Resident Applicant Information

    SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident to apply.
    For Permanent Resident applications we will request the following documentation:

    • Copy of Permanent Resident Card
    • International Qualifications Assessment (IQAS) International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) | Alberta.ca Your high school/secondary education credentials must be assessed through this service.
    • Canadian Language Benchmark – English Assessment of CLB 7. We will accept either International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Academic or Canadian English Language Proficiency Program (CELPIP) – General.

    Tuition, Fees, and Funding

    Students can expect to pay little to no tuition or fees to participate in this program. Career Centre staff will assess your eligibility for funding when you apply.

    What to Expect

    Day to Day

    Delivery Method

    The length of the Residential Renovation and Construction-High School program is 12 weeks full-time/60 days (360 hours).

    • This program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussions, assignments, and in-class review of topics.
    Attendance Policy

    Students are required to attend instructor-led theory and practical sessions and must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance throughout the program.

    Evaluation

    The assessment method is pass/fail. Students need to complete all courses in order to successfully complete the program.

    Graduation Requirements and Credential

    Successful students will receive an Applied Certificate from SIIT

    Career Opportunities & Salaries

    Graduates may find entry level work within their designated trade within a First Nation community or in an urban area.

    Further Education

    There may be an opportunity for students to become indentured as an apprentice through SIIT JTC, move to the next level of training, enroll in other programs or micro-credit courses.
