SIGA Maintenance
Worker Prep
Program Description
Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) has partnered with Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) to develop and deliver an Applied Certificate program that will upskill graduates in the areas of their responsibilities as ‘Maintenance Repair Workers’. This program is designed for the current SIGA employees and throughout the program, students will receive instruction and hands-on experience in various areas, including safety protocols, basic engine maintenance and repair, construction techniques, and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems. The program will be delivered in a hybrid manner with the courses delivered in person and online. On successful completion of the program, students will be well equipped with the skills that may be applicable in their career progression to the next level or to pursue their growth within construction, electrical, power engineering, or welding trades.

Academic Requirements
- SIGA will select participants in accordance with their job requirements for Maintenance Repair Worker 1
Non-Academic Requirements
- Students must be currently employed by SIGA and willing and ready to commit 30 hours per week for in-person courses and 15 hours per week for asynchronous courses
Industry Requirements
- SIGA Maintenance Repair Workers must have a class 5 driver’s license, be a minimum of 19 years of age, and they will be subject to a background check
- SIGA Maintenance Repair Workers may be required to work in an environment where they will be exposed to tobacco smoke, high noise levels, flashing and blinking lights, and a congested workplace
- Students must be in good physical condition with good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, physical agility, eye-hand coordination, and no medical restrictions
Acceptance Policy
Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.
English Language Benchmark
SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.
To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

What to Expect
Length of Program
The length of the SIGA Maintenance Repair Worker Prep program is 9.5 Weeks/65 days (285 hours) delivered over 13 calendar weeks in a hybrid fashion. The program will be a combination of full-time and part-time weeks completed in-person and virtually.
Instruction
This program will be taught using a hybrid model, via online self-study courses and in-person instructor led courses. The Essential Skills Courses (Communications and Trade Math) will be in-person and instructor-led. Fundamental Courses will be delivered virtually. Students will be responsible for completing 15 hours of coursework per week for virtual courses, which will include an instructor-led session/week. There will be two 1-week practicums held in-person during which the students will demonstrate the application of acquired skills. Lastly, students will complete a 2-week on-site work practicum at a SIGA location.
Attendance Policy
Students are required to maintain a 90% attendance rate to complete the program.
Evaluation
This program is based on a pass/fail assessment model and a marks-based assessment model. Pass/fail courses are evaluated based on successful completion of curricular outcomes. Marks-based courses are evaluated on successful completion of quizzes and tests, with a passing course mark of 65%. To graduate, students must have an overall program mark of 65% and a “Pass” designation for each pass/fail course. Students must pass each course to complete the program. Students will complete online quizzes at the end of all online sections in a course. Practical application of skills will be assessed during practicums. A qualitative rubric will be used to assess student skills and abilities
Graduation Document
Students who successfully complete the SIGA Maintenance Worker Prep Program will receive an Applied Certificate from SIIT.
Further Education
Students may explore Apprenticeship programs at SIIT or pursue related programs at partner post-secondary institutions.

Career Opportunities
The students of this program are current employees of SIGA, and successful completion of this program may enable them to progress in their career pathways.
Further Education
Students may pursue an apprenticeship as a power engineer, carpenter, electrician, or welder.
