Program Description

The SIIT Tiny Home Builder program is a 12-week program designed to prepare Indigenous people who are interested in exploring career paths in Carpentry. The program provides students with experience of building a tiny home, from the ground up. The program will develop the basic skills needed for entry-level work in residential or commercial construction. Students will develop skills in key aspects of house construction, job readiness, construction math, and safety.

  • Math Credit at the indicated grade level 10 (regular)
  • Science Credit at the indicated grade level 10
  • Applicants with lower-level academic credits may be considered by taking an entrance test
    to demonstrate comparable skills.

Industry Requirements

  • Students must be in good physical condition with good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, physical agility, hand-eye coordination, and no medical restrictions.

Acceptance Policy

Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.

English Language Benchmark

SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.

To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

Course Descriptions

TYHB 110 – Orientation to Trade

This course is an introduction to the job of a construction worker. The course explores types of trades and their activities, roles and responsibilities of a construction worker, basic terminology and trades as professions. Students will develop an understanding of the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship system and the benefits of trade certification. Students will also develop an understanding of employability skills like effective time management and personal responsibility. Students will develop career plans, resumes and cover letters to facilitate finding jobs in the future.

TYHB 111– Construction Safety (Tickets)

This course provides students with essential certifications and training necessary for working in the industry. This course ensures that students are well-prepared with the skills and knowledge required to maintain safety and respond effectively to emergencies in the workplace. Students will complete SCOT certification, WHMIS, and Fall Protection Training.

TYHB 112 – Foundations

This course is designed to give students basic knowledge of the construction of house foundations.
The course will cover the key elements to building the foundation including site preparation,
construction of footings, setting weeping tile, construction of foundation walls, and waterproofing
basement walls. Students will have the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in the practical
component of the course.
TYHB 113 – Framing
This course will introduce platform or western framing, the most common method of framing residential and small commercial buildings. This course will cover the key elements to framing the house including framing and sheathing the floors, walls, and roof. Students will have the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in the practical component of the course.

TYHB 114 – Doors and Windows

This course is designed to give students basic knowledge of installing exterior doors and windows in a house. This course covers installing the exterior doors and windows, and related trim. Students will have the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in the practical component of the course.

TYHB 115 – Roofing

This course prepares students to apply the roof of the house with various types of roofing materials. The course will cover commonly used types of roofing, roof components, and the application of roof coverings. Students will have the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in the practical component of the course.

TYHB 116 – Exterior and Interior Finish

This course is designed to give students basic knowledge of installing exterior and interior finish to a house. This course will cover applying the siding materials to the house and finishing the soffits, as well as interior wall and ceiling finish, interior doors, cabinetry, floor coverings, interior trim and painting. Students will have the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in the practical component of the course.

Tuition, Fees, and Funding

Eligible students can expect to pay little to no tuition or fees to participate in this program. Career Centre staff will assess your eligibility for funding when you apply.

What to Expect

Length of Program

The length of the Tiny Home Builder Program is 12 weeks full-time (360 hours).

Instruction

This program will consist of instructor-led classes which will encompass the theory of each course, and will include lectures, discussions, assignments, in-class review topics, and hands-on shop experience. Students will have access to course materials which will be distributed to each student as well as in digital format on D2L – Brightspace.

Academic Policy

Students attending must adhere to SIIT Academic & Student policies which are available on the student dashboard on the SIIT website.

Attendance Policy

  • Regular attendance is essential for academic success. Each program has specific attendance requirements that must be adhered to in order to graduate. In order to graduate from this program, an attendance rate of 90% or better is required.

Evaluation

This program is based on a 70% assessment model. A course passing mark is 60% and a passing overall mark is 70%. Students must successfully complete each course to complete the program.

Graduation Document

Successful students will receive an Applied Certificate from SIIT.

Further Education

Students may explore Apprenticeship programs at SIIT or pursue related programs at partner post-secondary institutions.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may gain entry-level employment in residential construction at both First Nation community level and in urban areas.
