Program Description

The SIIT Volunteer Firefighter (VFF) pump ‘A’ course provides training for Reserve Fire Fighters using IFSTA Pumping & Aeriel Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook, 3rd Edition curriculum. This program takes approximately one week to complete.

Admission Requirements

Students have at least a Grade 8 education with Grade 10 recommended.

Non-Academic Requirements

Students Must be in good physical condition with good eyesight, hearing, manual dexterity, physical agility, eye-hand coordination, and no medical restrictions.

Acceptance Policy

Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.

English Language Benchmark

SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.

To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

What to Expect

Length of Program

The VFF Pump ‘A’ program takes approximately 42 hours to complete.

Instruction

The program is delivered in First Nation communities using hands-on training grounds and their community fire apparatus and equipment.

Attendance Policy

Students are required to maintain a 90% attendance rate to complete the program.

Evaluation

Evaluation in the program will be through competency-based assessment of knowledge and skills. A Pass/Fail grading system will be used in evaluating the skills learned. A variety of checklists and observations will be used by the instructor to determine the achievement level of the specific skills.

Graduation Document

Successful students will receive a Certificate of Achievement for VFF Pump ‘A’.

Career Path

Career Opportunities

Students can become members of the on-reserve Fire Department and contribute to community safety. The emphasis of this program is on community-based, local firefighting training.
