Student IT guide

Everything you need to use your SIIT account, from your first day to your last.

New to SIIT? Start with the first-day checklist.

Your SIIT account

Your SIIT email address is also your username for Brightspace, Self-Service, mySIIT and Microsoft 365. You’ll get it, with your first password, when you start your program. Don’t have them? Contact the SIIT IT Dept.

  • Your password must be at least 14 characters. See siit.ca/password.
  • You’ll confirm sign-ins with Microsoft Authenticator on your phone.
  • Don’t share your password, and don’t use it for any other website.

Your everyday tools

Email (Outlook)

Read your SIIT email in a browser, or add your account to the Outlook app on your phone.

Can’t see a course in Brightspace?

  1. Not registered yet. A course appears in Brightspace only after you’re registered in it. Depending on your program, you register yourself in Self-Service or the Registrar registers you.
  2. Registered, but it’s not in Brightspace. If Self-Service shows you’re registered but the course isn’t in Brightspace, contact the SIIT IT Dept.
  3. The course is there, but you can’t open its content. Check with your instructor first.

Microsoft Office

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive and Teams are included with your SIIT account.

  1. On your laptop, go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps and sign in with your SIIT email and password.
  2. Select Install apps (top right), then Microsoft 365 apps.
  3. Open the file that downloads and follow the steps. On a Mac, open it from your Downloads folder and select Continue, Agree, then Install.
  4. When it’s done, open Word and sign in with your SIIT email.

Only need Word, Excel or PowerPoint quickly? Select them on the same page to use them in your browser, no install needed.

Office works on Windows and Mac. You can install it on up to 5 computers, 5 tablets and 5 phones. Save your work to OneDrive so it’s backed up and available on any device.

Wi-Fi on campus

Connect to the SIIT_Student network. Ask at your campus front desk or your instructor for the Wi-Fi password.

Buying a laptop for SIIT

You’ll use a laptop for Brightspace, Microsoft Office, online classes and assignments. If you’re buying one, here’s what to look for.

MinimumGets the job doneWindows 11 or a recent macOS · Intel Core i3 / AMD Ryzen 3 / Apple M1 or newer · 8 GB memory · 256 GB SSD storage · Wi-Fi 5 · webcam and microphone · 6+ hours battery
RecommendedLasts your whole programWindows 11 or a recent macOS · Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 / Apple M2 or newer · 16 GB memory · 512 GB SSD storage · Wi-Fi 6 · webcam and microphone · 8+ hours battery
  • Chromebooks and iPads can run Brightspace and Office in a browser, but not the full Office apps. They’re fine as a second device, not your only one.
  • Some programs use special software. Ask your program before you buy if you’re not sure.
  • Buy a warranty that covers accidents if you can, and keep your laptop updated.
  • Look for education pricing. Many stores offer student discounts with your SIIT email.

Stay safe

  • Only approve Authenticator sign-ins you started yourself.
  • Got a suspicious email? Forward it to phishing@siit.ca, or use Report → Phishing in Outlook. See scams and phishing.
  • Lock your laptop and phone with a PIN, password, face or fingerprint.
