Home Builder
Program Description
The SIIT Home Builder program is a 16-week program designed to prepare Indigenous people who are interested in a career path as a Carpenter. The program provides students with experience of building a complete home, from the ground up. The program will develop the basic skills needed for entry-level work in residential or commercial construction.
Students will develop skills in key aspects of house construction, job readiness, construction math, and safety. Students will also develop a good understanding of the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship system and the benefits of trade certification.
Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
- The minimum requirement is a Math 10 (regular not modified) and Science 10. This matches the requirements of SATCC for indenturing in the trade of Carpenter.
- If an applicant does not have the Grade 10 Math and Science, then an entrance test may need to be taken to show comparable level of academic skills.
Industry Requirements
- Able to perform physical work
- Comfortable working at heights
Acceptance Policy
Strong preference is given to applicants who are Status First Nations, but SIIT programs are open to anyone.
English Language Benchmark
SIIT is not currently legislated to accept International Students. You must be a Canadian/ Permanent Resident to apply.
To be admitted into this program you must be able to understand and communicate in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment of six – CLB6).

Tuition, Fees, and Funding
Eligible students can expect to pay little to no tuition or fees to participate in this program. Career Centre staff will assess your eligibility for funding when you apply.
What to Expect
Program Delivery
This program is delivered over a 16-week period.
Students will learn through a combination of classroom and work, building a new house from the ground up. The program is delivered on-site in a community. The students work under the supervision of the instructor who is a qualified journeyperson.
Attendance Policy
Regular attendance is essential for academic success. Each program has specific attendance requirements that must be adhered to in order to graduate. In order to graduate from this program, an attendance rate of 90% or better is required.
Graduation Document
Students who graduate from this program will earn an Applied Certificate. Students must pass all courses in the program to graduate. Students must pass all courses in the program to graduate. The assessment method is a combination of performance tests and written tests with a pass mark of 50%.
Career Opportunities
Graduates will find entry-level work in residential construction at both the First Nation community level and in urban areas.
Indigenous graduates of the program can become indentured as apprentices in the Carpentry trade through an employer or the SIIT Joint Training Committee (JTC). Any graduates who become apprentices will also get 480 hours of technical training credit.
The main purposes of the JTC are to indenture Aboriginal people in the construction trades in Saskatchewan and to assist these apprentices to achieve full journeyperson status in their respective construction trades.
